Most people's approach to building a knowledge base isn't different from building a library: collect, classify, archive. But this model has a fundamental flaw—it assumes knowledge is static, that "archiving" and "understanding" are the same thing.

Human memory never works this way. Every time you recall an experience, that experience gets rewritten—new emotions, new understanding, new context layered in. That's why for the same event, two witnesses give completely different accounts, each sincerely believing they saw the truth.

The purpose of memory isn't to preserve the past—it's to provide decision material for the future.

The failure of library-style retrieval

It's retrieval-based. You need to know the question to find the answer. But real understanding often happens during "unexpected connections"—when two unrelated fields collide and create a new perspective.

Next time you feel like you "understand" something, ask yourself: is this genuine understanding, or an assumption that hasn't yet encountered counterevidence?
